For the 2017 Autumn Internationals, Mercer received his first call-up to the England national rugby union squad, however, Eddie Jones viewed him as a developing player.
Mercer was named to England’s Six Nations Championship team in 2018, however, he did not make his debut until a non-test encounter against the Barbarians in May of that year. Mercer started the game at number eight and scored a try in the first half, but England was defeated by the seasoned Barbarians team.
Because of his outstanding performances, Mercer ultimately earned a berth in the starting lineup for England’s Autumn Internationals encounter against South Africa in 2018, when he made his official test debut. According to England’s national rugby union team coach Eddie Jones, Mercer will make his debut against Japan in the 2018 Autumn Internationals test match.
