He had planned to attend Linfield College to play basketball and baseball. Still, he was bothered by the aftereffects of a dislocated shoulder he had received as a senior at Creswell.

He subsequently went to the University of Oregon, wanting to play baseball there, but the Ducks had abandoned their varsity baseball program by the time he arrived. In 1987, he earned a BS in physical education from the University of Oregon.
