Dermot O’Neill, a well-known gardener and RTE presenter, passed away unexpectedly on Friday night at the age of 58.
He served as such an inspiration to countless gardeners over the years and tributes are pouring in continuously.
Dermot has also spoken at the Irish Cancer Society’s conference on survivorship in the Aviva Stadium about the advantages of gardening.

Dermot O’Neill Gardener Death Cause
Green-Fingered Dermot O’Neill, the well-known radio and television gardener, On Saturday night, he died at Dublin’s St. Vincent’s University Hospital.
His funeral plans have not yet been disclosed. “The shocking death has occurred of Dermot O’Neill of Blackrock, Co. Dublin,” states his death notice.
Dermot went away quietly while being cared for by the physicians, nurses, and ICU personnel and while being surrounded by his devoted family.
He received his stomach cancer diagnosis in 2009 when he was constructing his cherished walled garden at Clondeglass, a village in the Co. Laois foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains.
According to the gardener, “the treatment was difficult; at one point, a hole was drilled in my head.”
“Before I became unwell, I recall growing many beautiful items in the garden. While receiving therapy, I was unable to garden, but I did occasionally go there.”
After his therapy was over, he took his rehabilitation slowly but was in enough shape to plant some hyacinths. Dermot has been cancer-free since 2011.

Before joining the horticultural team at University College Dublin, O’Neill worked at the Marlfield Garden Centre in Cabinteely, Dublin.

He made multiple appearances on radio and television programs for RTE and BBC Northern Ireland. He often wrote columns for Irish publications such as the Sunday Independent, Northern Ireland Homes & Lifestyle, The Irish Times, and RTE Guide.
Following his cancer recovery, O’Neill finished producing Dermot’s Secret Garden for RTE, a television series about his health issues and the remodelling of his Victorian walled garden in Clondeglass, Co. Laois.
