Richard Jay Belzer was an American actor, stand-up comedian, and author who lived from August 4, 1944, to February 19, 2023.
The character he played as a regular cast member on the NBC police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as in guest appearances on several other shows, was John Munch, a BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and DA Investigator. From 1993 to 2016, he spent 23 years portraying the role.
Belzer opened for Warren Zevon on Saturday Night Live as a comic to warm up the audience.
Richard Belzer appeared in films including Fame, Café Flesh, Night Shift, Scarface, and A Very Brady Sequel as an infrequent actor and music video star.
Belzer co-hosted Brink & Belzer on 660AM WNBC and was a featured performer on the National Lampoon Radio Hour. He frequently appeared as a guest on right-wing radio shows hosted by Alex Jones and The Howard Stern Show. The Boston Marathon bombing was described by him as a false flag incident.
