President Paul Biya is one of the longest serving presidents in Africa, he has been serving as the President of Cameroon since November 6, 1982. Paul was born in Mvomeka in the southern region of Cameroon.He studied at the Lycée General Leclerc, Yaoundé, and in France at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, Paris, going on to the Institut des hautes études d’Outre-Mer, where he graduated in 1961 with a Higher Education Diploma in Public Law. Paul Biya was born into a very religious and christian family as his father, a catechist, wanted him to be priest at the age of 16.
Paul Biya Political Career
Paul Biya was an underdog in the Cameroon political arena until under President Ahmadou Ahidjo, when he was appointed to become the Director of the Cabinet of the Minister of National Education in January 1964 and Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Education in July 1965. Briefly after, he was appointed to hold the office of of the Director of the Civil Cabinet of the President in December 1967 and Secretary-General of the Presidency in January 1968. From there, he was chosen by Ahidjo as his successor.During the October 1997 presidential election, which was boycotted by the main opposition parties, Biya won flawlessly with a 92.6 percent of the vote.
Biya won another seven-year term in the October 2004 presidential election, officially taking 70.92 percent of the vote, although the opposition alleged widespread fraud.
