Fleetwood Mac, a hugely popular Anglo-American pop-rock group, was founded as a British blues band, and their 1977 album Rumours was one of the best-selling songs of all time.
Fleetwood Mac, formed in 1967 by former members of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers guitarist Green, drummer Fleetwood, bassist John McVie, and slide guitarist Spencer, had rapid success during the British blues boom with its debut album and the hit song “Albatross” (1968).
The band experienced very minor success after Green’s departure and the addition of McVie’s wife, keyboardist-vocalist-songwriter Christine, despite undergoing a series of lineup changes.
The group gained a pop sensibility after relocating to the United States in 1974 and adding singer-songwriters Nicks and Buckingham (the latter of whom is a skilled guitarist). This led to the creation of the massively successful Fleetwood Mac (1975) and Rumours.
Rumours, which won the Grammy Award for album of the year, perfectly encapsulated the band’s accomplished songwriting, arresting vocal chemistry, and rock-solid rhythm section. It did this by evocatively reflecting the concurrent breakdowns of the McVies’ marriage and Buckingham and Nicks’ relationship.
After 1979’s eccentric Tusk, the band members started focusing on their own careers. Nicks’ album Bella Donna (1981), which included the hits “Edge of Seventeen” and the Tom Petty duet “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” reached number one, and Buckingham’s single “Trouble” cracked the Billboard Top Ten.
