In a startling turn of events at the NCAA Championships, Purdue’s Matt Ramos caused one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Wrestling history by pinning three-time national champion Spencer Lee of Iowa in the waning moments of their semifinal match.

Ramos had other ideas than Lee’s pursuit of his fourth national championship. The Boilermakers’ Ramos, a redshirt sophomore, has been practicing every day with the goal of defeating Lee.

Ramos led 4-1 after bringing Lee down for a takedown and two nearfall points in the opening frame. After opting to go on top in the second period, Lee fought back and took the lead with a score of 5-4.

With less than a minute left in the third period, Lee got a takedown and went up 7-4. With 30 seconds left, Ramos was able to get away and knock Lee to the ground, even the score at 7-7.

Ramos subsequently completed the pin with 0.1 seconds left on the clock, keeping Lee from becoming the fifth wrestler to win four consecutive national championships. Ramos had earlier in the week demonstrated a talent for exciting finishes.

To proceed to the quarterfinals, he defeated Jarrett Trombley of N.C. State 6-5 in a tiebreaker overtime match after winning his opening round 3-2. In the quarterfinals, Ramos beat West Virginia’s Killian Cardinale 8-7 with a reversal that he scored with just two seconds remaining.

Chris and Shelley Ramos welcomed Matt Ramos into the world on April 27, 2001, in Naperville, Illinois. His two siblings are Brandon, a younger brother, and Brittany, an elder sister. Ramos enrolled at the University of Minnesota in 2018 to continue his love of wrestling after graduating from Lockport High School in 2019.

Ramos suffered an injury during his first year at the University of Minnesota in 2019–20 that prevented him from competing in the wrestling season. However, he made use of the time to continue training with the Gopher Wrestling Club and finally took an Olympic redshirt in 2020-21.

Ramos had the opportunity to compete in both the 57 kg weight class in the 2021 UWW Junior Freestyle Championships, where he placed, and the 2021 U23 Freestyle National Championships, where he finished sixth.

Ramos fared brilliantly in his first university season as a redshirt freshman, ending with a record of 21-10 in the 133-pound weight class. His 12-3 dual record helped him win the honor of being Purdue’s most outstanding freshman. Ramos also qualified for the NCAA Championships with an automatic bid to the Big Ten Championships.
