Sam Maloof (January 24, 1916 – May 21, 2009) was a furniture designer and carpenter who lived in Los Angeles, California. Samuel Solomon Maloof was born in Chino, California, to Lebanese immigrants. He is a member of the big Maalouf family and was raised there. In his first year of high school, he attended Chaffey High School in Ontario, California, where he took his first carpentry class and was immediately recognised as a student of exceptional ability by his art instructor. Later, he went on to Chino High School in Chino, California. Following high school, he started working in the art department of the Vortox Manufacturing Company in Claremont, California, where he remained for many years. On October 11, 1941, he was called up to serve in the United States Army. Maloof served in the Pacific theatre of operations before moving to a station in Alaska. He was honourably discharged from the army in 1945 and returned to his home in Southern California.

In 1948, Sam Maloof married Alfreda Louise Ward, and the pair moved into a home at 921 Plaza Serena in Ontario, California, where Sam established a furniture factory in the garage. Maloof created and constructed a suite of furniture for his house, mostly out of need, utilising recycled materials and reclaimed wood. A series of commissioned works followed, and Maloof continued to create art in the garage of his house in Ontario from 1949 until 1952. In 1953, Maloof moved to Alta Loma, California, where he remained for the rest of his life. Over time, he expanded the initial 6-room home to include 16 more rooms, including a furniture-making business and studio. In 2000, the Maloof property was relocated approximately 3 miles to its current location at 5131 Carnelian Street (northeast corner of the intersection with Hidden Farm Road; 34.1612°N 117.6157°W? / 34.1615.7 (Maloof house)), due to the path of the new CA-210 freeway extension passing through the property.
