The business was founded by Tara Fela-Durotoye in the year 1998. She was at that time an undergraduate as a bridal makeup artiste with her first makeup shop. Tara strategically sold dreams of beauty to a world that thrives on it and therefore became successful. At first, she began working for a makeup outfit while she was awaiting admission into the university. Thereafter, she gained admission into the prestigious University of Lagos, she had mastered the trade and the university environment was the best platform to kick off the business. She decided to get her first makeup kit and so the journey commenced.
No so long after start-up, she reached a turning point and gained access to a huge network of people and huge sales followed. Subsequently in the year 2004, she started her makeup studio ‘House of Tara’ and a makeup school alongside for training and mentoring young women, empowering them for financial independence without moral compromise. At that time, there were no makeup schools in Nigeria and she developed a detailed makeup curriculum that has since then moulded the beauty industry as we know.
Most of the industry’s training occurred informally through apprenticeships and internships that were often unpaid and usually inaccessible to people without good financial backing and connections. With so really stressful routes and channels to the beauty industry and so many young people showing interest in the business, someone needed to bridge the gap and House of Tara did just that.
House of Tara makeup school opened its doors in a modest facility in Victoria Island, Lagos and recruited its first set of its pioneer set of trainees/students.
