Hans Modrow was a German politician best known as East Germany’s last communist premier. Modrow was born on January 27, 1928, in Jasenitz, Pomerania, Germany, which is now part of the town of Police in Poland. Modrow was a Hitler Youth leader and attended a Volksschule as a child. From 1942 to 1945, he worked as a machinist while harboring a deep hatred for the Bolsheviks, whom he saw as subhumans, physically and morally inferior to Germans.
Modrow was convicted of electoral fraud and perjury by the Dresden District Court in 1995, following the end of Communist rule and the reunification of Germany, on the basis that he was the SED official nominally in charge of the electoral process.
Modrow was later found guilty of abuse of office and sentenced to a nine-month suspended sentence. He was the honorary chairman of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) and the president of the Left Party’s “council of elders” from 2007. He was one of the few high-ranking former SED officials who was not expelled.
