Gregg Berhalter United States Head Coach

Berhalter became the manager of the United States national team on December 2, 2018. He earned his first victory as manager in a friendly against Panama on January 27, 2019.

Gregg Berhalter Usmnt

This is the United States men’s national team and Berhalter was made the new coach. Cannon who is a player in that team commented that it was interesting playing with the coach. He said that Berhalter was a tactical-sided coach and he has a certain way of going about things.

Gregg Berhalter Tactics

Berhalter has been renowned for his system that produces a fairly sophisticated brand of attacking soccer. In each of the 5 years, excluding 2016, he has led the Crew to the playoffs and at least past the initial knockout round. The team also made it to MLS Cup in 2015, where they fell 2-1 to the Portland Timbers.

This season looked a good deal like the Crew always looked under Berhalter. In possession, the fullbacks pushed up, the centerbacks went a little wide, and Wil Trapp slid between them. The team tried to hold the ball, play down the flanks, switching the field as needed until the team could put the ball into the six-yard box for Gyasi Zardes to tap in.

The focus of Berhalter’s team this year was to maximize the ability of the team to hold possession. Each year, the Crew has been a high possession team, 6th in total possession this year, 3rd in pass accuracy. In order to achieve this, the players position themselves to allow for lots of combinations makes.

Playing down the wings is not at all unusual. Every team spends more time on the wings than in the center, with no team managing 33% in the center, at least in the attack. But this is quite interesting given who the players on the Crew are and how they play.

Given that the team is so interested in possession, and particularly long strings of possession, one would think that playing down the middle would be encouraged. This combination of tactics has led to a statistically successful team, balanced both in defense and offense.

Gregg Berhalter Teams Coached

Hammarby IF

Berhalter coached Hammarby IF a Swedish club since December 12, 2011. He was the first American to ever manage a professional soccer team in Europe. He was fired on July 24, 2013, for a “lack of attacking play”. Hammarby was in eighth place at the time of the sacking.

Columbus Crew SC

On November 6, 2013, he became the sporting director and head coach of Columbus Crew. Under Berhalter, Columbus Crew SC qualified for the playoffs in 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. They reached the MLS Cup Final in 2015 but lost at home 2–1 to the Portland Timbers.

Gregg Berhalter Bundesliga

In his final Bundesliga 2 game for Cottbus, Berhalter scored a penalty in a 3-1 win over the team he would join later in the summer of 2006, 1860 Munich. Such was the American’s natural authority that he was immediately chosen as club captain of Die Löwen by his new teammates, just ahead of the experienced Torben Hoffmann who had already played 121 league games for the club at that point.

Against a backdrop of financial woes off the pitch, 1860 never seriously threatened to return to the Bundesliga over the following three seasons. Their captain ended up leaving in April 2009 the club had to insist that it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke returning to the United States and LA Galaxy after 15 years in Europe.

After kicking off his coaching career proper with a reasonably successful two-year stint in charge of Swedish side Hammarby, the former Bundesliga 2 stalwart was tempted back to Germany to take an intensive coaching course in Cologne.

In the end, Berhalter returned to the MLS in 2013 to take charge of Columbus Crew, where he remained until US Soccer came calling in late 2018. But there is no doubt that the 45-year-old was heavily influenced by his time in Germany – which should come in handy when he calls on Bundesliga-based American stars.

Gregg Berhalter Hire

U.S. Soccer hires Berhalter as the permanent head coach of the United States Men’s National Team. The 48-year-old Berhalter leaves Columbus Crew SC to take over a national team that hasn’t had a permanent head coach in 416 days. Dave Sarachan has served as the team’s interim head coach since Bruce Arena resigned on October 13, 2017.

Gregg Berhalter College

Berhalter played college soccer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1993, he spent the collegiate offseason playing for the Raleigh Flyers of the USISL. He is the godson of Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame baseball player Carl Yastrzemski.

Gregg Berhalter Seeking A Professional Challenge

Playing at the University of North Carolina from 1991-94, Berhalter said that college soccer helped him adjust to the physical side of the game, but felt he needed a bigger challenge and elected to leave the Tar Heels after his junior season.

With Major League Soccer not set to launch until 1996, he looked abroad for his first professional opportunity and perhaps foreshadowed his move into management.

“I knew at the time I wanted soccer to be my life,” he told in 2002. “Looking back, at the time I did choose a risky path, deciding to leave college early to go to Europe.”

Fortunately, he found a good situation with Dutch Eerste Divisie side PEC Zwolle, where he was drafted into the starting XI straight away in 1994. The signing began a six-year sojourn for Berhalter in Holland, spending two years each at Zwolle and Sparta Rotterdam before winning back-to-back Player of the Year honors at SC Cambuur.

Beginning to find his way with the U.S. Men’s National Team around that time, Berhalter spent a season with English League Championship side Crystal Palace in 2001. Following two strong performances for the MNT at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, he moved back to the continent with German club Energie Cottbus.

Gregg Berhalter After Cottbus

After helping Cottbus regain promotion to the Bundesliga, Berhalter moved across Germany where he continued as captain of 1860 Munich for three more seasons. A smart and vocal defender, Berhalter also honed his skills with penalty kicks in Germany, often taking attempts for his clubs.

Always holding a desire to play in the USA, Berhalter returned home to end his career with the LA Galaxy in 2009. That year, he helped the club to the 2009 MLS Cup Final.

Despite converting his penalty, the Galaxy fell to Real Salt Lake in a shootout. He helped the Galaxy claim the 2010 MLS Supporters Shield, and while serving as a player/assistant coach in 2011 earned that title along with the MLS Cup to end his career.
