Zobrist found a passion for baseball when he was only eight years of age. From then on, he would regularly play the game and gradually got better as well. He graduated from Eureka High School in 1999 but was in a dilemma on whether his dream of being a baseball player would be fulfilled since he was not getting recruited.
His coach advised him to participate in an annual summer event where seniors could showcase their skills. Those present in the event were impressed with Zobrist and he would get an offer to play for Olivet Nazarene University. He shined as a player there even winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
