She focused on representational painting, a tag that was not encouraged in her undergraduate program. After having a view on Odd Nedrum presentation at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, she traveled to his place in order to gain more experience though learning from him.

Later in 1990, she was awarded a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Stanford University.

Francesca had independent performances at the Grover or Thurston Galleries, Davidson Galleries, Linda Warren Gallery, Diane Nelson Fine Art, Olga Dollar Gallery, and Parker/Zinc Gallery, Hall Spassov Gallery and she now works with the permanent collections of the Tacoma Art Museum, Microsoft, and the University of Washington Medical Center.

In a re considerations of Sundsten’s 2003 exhibit of drawings and paintings at the Davidson Galleries, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer revealed that “Francesca’s fine paintings and mastery of realism hides in haze. Her quirky, starkly confrontational imagery doesn’t disturb as much as it questions. The characters hang in confused naivete, pondering, ‘How did I get here?”

Of her 2013 exhibit creatures at the Grover/Thurston Galleries, art critic Michael Upchurch revealed “Throughout “Creatures,”Sundsten dazzling painterly facility makes her fantastical subjects feel preposterously plausible.” Despite being a student of arts, she also became a teacher at Stanford University. the Pratt Institute and Cornish College of Arts.

On August 7, 2019, it was announced that Francesca passed away due to lymphoma complications and she died on 9th March 2019. Lymphoma is a kind of cancer that initiates in infection-fighting cells of the immune system called lymphocytes. The cells are usually in the lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, bone marrow and other critical parts of the body. when an individual has lymphoma, lymphocytes changes and grow out of control.
