He was spotted by a Paramount pictures scout when he was doing a training film for the United States Navy. Kelley had over 120 acting credits to his name and first appeared in the short Time to Kill in 1945. He starred as Dr. McCoy on the television series Star Trek from 1966 to 1969. Kelley provided the voice of Dr. McCoy for Star Trek: The Animated Series from 1973 to 1974. He also played Dr. McCoy in the Star Trek film series from 1979 to 1991. Kelley also appeared in episodes of the TV series The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, and Bonanza. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7021 Hollywood Blvd. in 1991.
